The difference between American and European Music Making…

comes in many different shapes, sizes and colors. Today I invited my professor from the Royal Liege Conservatory Olivier Haas to dissect these differences!

It was a true pleasure having Olivier on the podcast. My year studying with him at the conservatory reshaped my entire life and was what ultimately planted the seed for Breakthrough Music!

FYI…

Most of this podcast content is a lot of generalizing. There is no hard data to back up our claims. It’s simply what we’ve experienced over the years so if you are an American or European listening to this, please don’t take offense to anything we say!

Many of the differences we’ve found between American and European music making are subtle. It’s sometimes a subtle mindset on what the end product should sound like. Others it’s drastic ways of approaching daily practice sessions. Olivier recommends a perfect combination of the “Analytical American” and the “Emotional European” in your musicianship.

We also briefly talk about how the differences in our governments affect music education (specifically the introduction to large ensembles) and how that ultimately affects future musicians. . Finally, I ask Olivier about his view on positivity. When studying in Liege I noticed that a number of the professors held the stereotypical “scary conservatory teacher” to be true…but not Olivier. He always brought a certain encouraging familiarity to each lesson that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

Olivier was the catalyst for so many amazing things that have happened for me. I can’t thank him enough for taking the time today!

Take a listen to Olivier performing on bass trumpet with the Connected Slides ensemble!
