The 10,000 hour rule states…

that “it takes anyone approximately 10,000 hours to master any skill”. Malcolm Gladwell, a 5x New York Times best selling author and journalist for the New Yorker is best known for this┬áconcept in his book Outliers: The Story of Success.

As musicians, this is no foreign debate but is it simply a matter of time? Can we just head into the practice room day after day and we become a master at our craft? Well today on the podcast we’re going to talk about this among other factors of success.

Let’s first talk about a persons natural born abilities (DNA).

If you look at any type of athlete that has any level of success, you know that they have to have natural abilities. They had to be born with a specific body type, build, and spatial awareness. The same goes for any type performer. A musician needs to be born with a certain type of personality that enjoys being in front of people and sharing a message.

Then of course there is some luck. In Gladwell’s book Outliers, he takes an in depth look at Bill Gates and how lucky he was to be located within walking distance of a main frame…in the 70’s! Anyone that even pursued music had to have parents that supported them in their artistic endeavors, as well as living in a school system with some sort of decent music program.

Although if I had to decide which one was more important it would absolutely be the amount of hard work. Notice how I didn’t say hours! It takes┬ástrategic work to make improvements everyday.

The reality is that you’ve never seen anyone have any level of success without putting in a tremendous amount of work…no matter how naturally gifted they are!
