Sometimes when we look at someone’s career…

We often say “wow…how do I get there”? I’m always asking that question and instead of pondering it myself, I go and talk to the people who have it!

This week I sit down with renowned tubist and educator Joanna Hersey. This multi faceted musician seems to have it all! She is Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Yamaha and Parker Mouthpiece Performing Artist, founding member of numerous ensembles such as Athena Brass Band and JAM, and incredible solo artist just to name a few!

With all of those accomplishments, I had to try and uncover the “secret sauce”. This manifisted in a great conversation about…

  • The value of graduate school
  • The importance of a strong “art first” mindset
  • Speaking from the heart
  • How creativity looks as a low brass musician
  • The balance between patience and hard work

If you want to see all that Joanna is up to, you can check out her website here.

Don’t forget to listen to some of her killer creative work on her soundcloud channel!
