Theming your days.

Being organized is a huge aspect of success. If you don’t have your ducks in a row, you can’t form any type of good habits and of course your can’t make any progress.

As a performing artist you probably know this. Each day you have certain routines that you go through, certain drills and exercises, and different types of music you practice. The day of a concert you also have routines such as what you eat, when you leave, and how you warm-up. All of these routines have been birthed from your organization.

I’ve been trying a new tactic this past week and I’ve been applying to all aspects of my life.

Theming your days.

Let me use the example of cleaning my house.

  • On Monday I vacuum the carpet
  • On Tuesday I clean the bathrooms
  • On Wednesday I do the laundry
  • On Thursday I clean the windows
  • On Friday I clean the kitchen
  • On Saturday I dust

By the way this is my actual schedule! It’s working really well because when I get into each part of the house, I’m in that specific zone! I’m using only the supplies I need for that part of the house. I’m not overwhelmed because I know exactly what I need to do prior!

So I decided to implement this in my practice routine. Each day I have a different theme of musical development I’m focusing on. Whether its technical elements, performance strategies or memorization, organizing your days with specific themes can prove to be extremely beneficial for growth and avoiding burnout

Check out my specific theme schedule in this weeks episode of the Practice Room!
